In this event, more than 20 Chinese painting and calligraphy artists not only prepared more than 50 painting and calligraphy works in advance, but also passionately and enthusiastically wielded their painting and calligraphy brushes with splash-ink on site, expressing their true feelings of deep concern for and emotional ties to the people affected by the earthquake in Ya’an and thus elaborately creating a batch of high-quality art works. The artists showed reverence for life, being deeply grateful for the earthquake relief work that had been and is being done. Ding Guanji, Zhao Dawu and a lot of other artists who could not attend, also created art pieces in advance and offered them as tribute to the earthquake-stricken area. On location, charity entrepreneur Wang Bingshun, Chen Dengguang, Wang Qingyi chipped in with the zest of action and a high sense of social responsibility; cherishing and helping those in distress and peril: With a spirit of vigorous dedication to return something to society, they generously donated 300,000 RMB via the China Charity Project Committee to the disaster-hit area. It is understood that all the painting and calligraphy art works that were created during and for the event, as well as the donations will be used to support the disaster victims and aid post-disaster reconstruction.

The painting and calligraphy artists one by one expressed that “difficulty is the nurse of greatness” and that it goes without saying that fund-raising is an obligation for each and every single one of them. After having seen and heard the news of the earthquake in Lushan County’s Ya’an, everybody was overcome by a deep feeling of grief. The present artists agreed that as professional artists, they felt obliged to pick up the brushes in their hands to leverage lofty sentiments and undaunted spirit in order to sort things out for the disaster area. Although they cannot overcome disaster, their love and compassion along with the donations can be delivered to the earthquake-stricken area where they can alleviate the effects of disaster. Having faith in the loving care and kind solicitude of the Party Central Committee and in the State Council, the people in Sichuan are bound to carry on a spirit of dedication for earthquake relief work, standing and facing natural disasters and struggling against the consequences of the earthquake with the help of their “sense of self-reliance, tenacious struggle, one heart one mind mentality, solidarity, discreteness and hard work.”

CICCC Party Secretary and Executive Chairman Long Yuxiang held a speech at the fund-raising ceremony. He spoke highly of the spirit of utter devotion, love and compassion for the disaster area that the present painting and calligraphy artists and charity entrepreneurs were showing. He said that “the sky will not fall because of the earthquake and much loves come through when disaster strikes.” This can be seen as the whole nation is concerned about the disaster area. CICCC is also constantly keeping an eye on the people in the disaster-stricken area: Its Northeast Liaison Department responded in the first moment and rapidly built an emergency command brigade in the city of Dalian; while at the same time buying and raising money for urgently needed medicines with the value of 100,000 RMB and emergency communications command equipment worth 1.1 million RMB and then rushing to the disaster area on the 21st of April where the brigade quickly threw itself into the rescue and relief work. Being the first civil disaster relief and rescue team of the Northeast to arrive in Ya’an’s disaster area, the brigade successfully completed its earthquake relief mission on the 27th of April. China International Cultural Communication Center, China Charity Project Committee and China Painting and Calligraphy Art Committee will continue to pay attention to the progress of earthquake relief, keeping abreast of the needs and demands of the people in the disaster area. While assisting the central Chinese and Sichuan provincial government in doing a good job in their earthquake relief work, the three organizations will also undertake corresponding aided and scientific reconstruction, as well as other types of preparatory work in order to help people of Ya’an to rebuild their beautiful homeland and to realize the Ya’an dream.
